RESEARCH INTERESTS & POTENTIAL PROGRAM

Changes in Global Vegetation Greenness: My principal research interest is understanding the magnitude and drivers of changes in global vegetation greenness (photosynthesizing green leaf area) at seasonal to interannual time scales. Example studies are given below -

       1.Samanta, A., Ganguly, S., Hashimoto, H., Devadiga, S., Vemote, E., Knyazikhin, Y., Nemani, R.R. and Myneni, R.B., Amazon forests did not green-up during the 2005 drought, Geophys. Res. Lett., Vol. 37, L05401, doi:10.1029/2009GL042154, 2010.

Remote Sensing of Vegetation: To help me research global vegetation greenness, I use remote sensing technology. I have developed algorithms for the estimation of green leaf area and fraction vegetation absorbed photosynthetically active radiation from various satellite-based sensors (AVHRR, MODIS, MISR and NPP-VIIRS). These algorithms are based on the physics of radiative transfer in vegetation. Example studies are given below –

Vegetation-Climate Interactions: I am also interested in understanding how climate impacts vegetation and the feedback of vegetation changes on climate. Towards this goal, I have developed mechanistic models and used climate models. Example studies are given below -

Terrestrial Carbon Cycle: One obvious research interest, given my expertise in vegetation remote sensing, is the terrestrial carbon cycle. My research focus is assessing the sink strength of terrestrial vegetation. Example studies are given below -
